13 for 13

I am joining Pam at Everyday Snapshots for the story of 2013 in photos. I have picked one photo per month, plus a special bonus photo. As I looked through my pictures, I realized that I did not take enough pictures of our everyday life, especially of the teenager!
I have made a resolution to take at least one picture a day in 2014.

7 Quick Takes (vol. 7)

I hope everyone is experiencing a wonderful Christmas! I am enjoying the time I am spending with my family. It has been three weeks since I have written in this little space of mine. My Advent was wonderful. I have spent a lot of time my with my family and friends, and I made crafts and tasty treats to give as gifts. I am relaxing at home today, so I thought today would be a good day to revisit my blog. I am joining Jen for 7 Quick Takes since it is Friday. Here is a glimpse of the last three weeks of my life.

Yarn Along

I am knitting another Grey Loop. I had to frog my first one. I was six rows away from the end of the pattern and realized a mistake in the first section of eyelets. It was a mistake that I could not live with, so I had to rip it out. I was very sad.
I am reading The Greatest Gift, written by Ann Voscamp. It is an Advent devotional. So far, so good!
I finally finished my stash blanket. I posted a picture of it last week.
Yarn Along is hosted by Ginny at Small Things.

Craft completed: jewelry for friends and family

I have made several pieces of jewelry in the last couple of months. I made a birds nest pendant for my friend, Julie, with silver plated wire, two rose quartz beads to represent her daughters, and two Swarovski crystal pearls to represent her sons.

Off the needles

Off of the tapestry needles are two little cross stitched bibs. I found the baby bibs in my old stash of cross-stitch stuff that I rescued from my basement several weeks ago. I knew that I wanted to make something special two little girls, so I immediately went to work on the bibs. I purchased the stuffed bear and cow from Amazon. I am happy with how they turned out.

On Sunday, my sister-in-law gifted me with soft baby Alpaca yarn. She recently moved, and her nearest neighbors raise Alpacas and operate a country store.

Theme Thursday: Orange

When I read that the theme this week was orange I knew that I wanted to join the link-up. Orange is my favorite color.

Scrumptious

My friend, Laura, tagged me for a Scrumptious Blog award. Laura writes at String of Pearls, and she is also the author of Finding Grace. If you have not already, you should take a moment to meet Laura, and you should read her book!

Now for Laura's questions:

The Story of How We Met

I was in the 8th grade the first time I heard someone mention Chris. It was the spring of 1990, late in the day, and my junior high school was buzzing with the story of two high school boys in a fist fight outside of our school in the parking lot. Chris was one of those boys. Shortly after that story, I would hear his name again mentioned in another story. There was a bonfire that I had decided not attend even though several of my friends asked me to go (being a shy and introverted girl, I decided the comfort of my room sounded more appealing than a crazy teen party). At the bonfire, there was an impromptu wrestling match between two friends that ended with one a broken leg. Chris was one of the wrestlers but not the one with the broken leg. After hearing both of these stories, I decided that Chris was not a guy I needed to get to know.

Early in my 9th grade year, I saw Chris for the first time. I was leaving the Chorus room (a huge room that held about 200 students), and I noticed a tall blond haired boy leaning against the wall opposite the chorus room doors. I did not know whom he was, but I thought he was cute. Then I saw him look down at a girl as she walked up to him and wrapped her arms around him. Instantly, I knew his name. The girl in his arms was in my grade. She was not a close friend of mine, but she sat near me at lunch. Most days she came to lunch with a new story about her awful boyfriend, Chris. The same Chris from the fist fight and the bonfire. I quickly dismissed the idea that he was cute, and I forgot about him.

7 Quick Takes (vol. 6)

1. Tomorrow is my wedding anniversary. Stop by tomorrow if you want to know all the details about how we met. Just to give you an idea of how the story goes, I almost titled it "He was a fighter, and I was a grouch".

2. I won't get to spend my anniversary with my husband. He has to work, and I have my sister-in-law's baby shower to go to. Oh well, maybe we will manage to sneak away for a bit on Sunday.

Our School Day

Here is an example of what a typical school day looks like in our home. We have a senior in high school, a fifth grader, and a kindergartner.

The little boys, Chris, and I wake up between 6:30 am and 7:30 am. We get dressed, eat breakfast, clean up the kitchen, click around on the computer, and watch a show on Netflix. I wake Holden up at 8:00 am. After Holden washes his face, he comes down to the kitchen for a cup of coffee. He chats for a few minutes before starting his school work in the schoolroom. Chris and Thomas go down to the basement for a 30 to 40 minute workout that includes cardio and weight training.

7 Very Quick Takes

1. One reason I have neglected my blog is that I have been very busy since school started. We are having a great year so far. We love most of our curriculum choices this year. I am thinking about writing up a post about what are using this year, but I keep talking myself out of it.

Our schoolroom

We keep all of our curriculum and school supplies in the room that should be our home's formal dining room. Most of the furniture is old. We have collected many of the pieces through the years from our family and friends. Our schoolroom is not pretty, but we love it!

Yarn and Garden

As I was finishing the morning dishes, I thought that maybe I should blog today. This week I have been busy doing productive things like cleaning closets and organizing our schoolroom. I have also spent my time not so wisely knitting and watching Dance Moms (oh the drama). Normally, I stay away from reality TV, but I absolutely love dance shows!

Anyway, I am kind of at a loss for truly interesting content, so I decided to bore most of you and excite a few of you with a knitting and garden update.

July Skirt Challenge Update

Pants free for a month? Maybe not!

The July skirt challenge started with this post. In it, I mentioned that I used to weigh 70 pounds* heavier than I do now. Below is photographic evidence.

Wednesday is my second favorite day of the week (Sunday is my favorite day). Why, you ask? Well, Wednesday is the day I get to talk and read about my two favorite hobbies, knitting and reading.

WIWS

Happy Sunday! Today is the start of Chris's week off from work. Yay! We went to Mass this morning and then spent the day in the yard. I pulled weeds, and he tried to get  the power washer to work. It never did start! Then I made dinner and dessert. I thought about not posting what I wore to Mass today because it is so blah, but Holden took the picture this morning, so I figured I might as well post it.

Craft completed: a bracelet for Erin

Chris's cousin, Erin, is visiting from Kentucky. She shares the same birthday as Chris's sister, Abby. Abby turned 19 years old, and Erin turned 21 years old this week. They decided to have an Alice in Wonderland themed party. It was fun!

7 Quick Takes (vol 4)

1. I mentioned last week that I would write about wearing skirts and my body issues, but honestly, I can not wrap my brain around that post right now. This week has been one rollercoaster ride, and I am feeling negative about my body, and its inability to work properly.

2. I ran a few errands on Monday, and one of the places I visited was the thrift store. Below is a picture of me wearing the new skirt I bought for $3.75. I think it was a great find!

Yarn Along

Last week, we found out that we will meet our new niece after Thanksgiving!  In the last twelve years, my in-laws have happily celebrated the birth of seven grandsons. Their only granddaughter turns thirteen years old next month. Needless to say, we love our boys, but everyone is excited to welcome another girl into the family. Hannah Marie is due to arrive in November.

Yarn and Garden

I finally finished knitting my scarf! I am very happy with how it turned out. I sewed a couple of small buttons to one end so I could close it. There are many different ways to wear it. I am not sure which way I like best!

Kohlrabi - from the garden to the table

This year is the first year that I grew kohlrabi in my garden. I like a variety of vegetables and I enjoy trying new to me foods. Kohlrabi is popular in Central European and Asian cuisine. It can be eaten raw or cooked. It is described as having a similar flavor to broccoli, mixed with cabbage and radish.

I read that it should be eaten when it is on the young side. The bulb that grows above the ground should be eaten when it is a little smaller than a tennis ball.

WIWS

Happy Sunday! We just returned home from Mass, and we are looking forward to spending the day together as a family. I just wanted to take a minute to post a picture of what I wore to Mass this week, and ask you ladies a question.

First the picture.

July Skirt Challenge

Rosie at A blog for my Mom wrote about her mom style and her decision go pants free for the month of July. She asked if anyone wanted to join her little experiment. I decided it would be a great way for me to make some decisions about the feelings that I have been wrestling with about my body and my wardrobe.

I will start by telling you that I love skirts. When we came back to the Church almost ten years ago, I wore only skirts for many years. I got away from wearing skirts about three years ago when I started losing the weight from second and third pregnancies. At that time, I received hand me downs from friends that were mostly pants and shorts.

Off Of The Needles

I finished the Garden Trellis Dress.  I think this is a great little dress. I will definitely knit another one.

I had some trouble with the chart for the diamond eyelet. I was reading the chart like the dress was knit flat instead of in the round, and I did not realize my mistake until I was finished the first two rows of diamonds! Even though I had figured out my mistake, I decided that I was going to leave the diamonds out of the dress and just knit the dress in stockinette stitch until the yoke. It was totally my mistake, and not the pattern!

Five years ago Ralph made his entrance into the world!

What a fun filled, action packed five years it has been!

WIWS

Happy Sunday! The day started out so nice, and then we got to Mass! Ralph talked, whistled, wiggled, and kicked the entire time we were at Mass. Ralph's birthday is tomorrow. He will be five years old. He can think of nothing else. Needless to say, he did not get a donut, and I ate two!

Craft completed: bracelets for Abby and Emily

I made bracelets for my sister-in-laws' Gotcha Day gifts this year. I used freshwater pearls for the first one and dyed imperial jasper for the second one. I added a rose charm to each bracelet and used a toggle clasp to finish the bracelets. The charm and toggle clasps have a gunmetal finish.

Have you completed a craft project recently? If so, please leave me a comment. I would love to hear about it.

Theme Thusday: Black and White

Recently, we have had many thunderstorms roll through town. I love thunderstorms. As a kid, I sat on my grandparents' front porch and waited for storms to start.
I took these pictures of a storm that rolled in fast a couple of weeks ago. The sky was very dark, and the air was thick.

Craft completed: rosary bracelet

I have wanted a rosary bracelet for a long time. This week I finally made one for myself. I used 10mm India agate beads, an Our Lady of Perpetual Help charm, a crucifix, and a silver toggle clasp. I love the way my rosary bracelet turned out. I know I will wear this bracelet often.

Have you completed a craft project recently? If so, please leave me a comment. I would love to hear about it.

Theme Thursday: Water

I am linking up with Cari at Clan Donaldson for Theme Thursday again. Today's theme is water.
I love taking pictures of water. I have a ridiculous amount of water pictures. Today I am sharing a few pictures that I took last August while we were vacationing in Maine.
