Theme Thursday: Mom

This is my first time joining the fun over at Clan Donaldson for Theme Thursday.

The theme is Mom.

My relationship with my mother is not a traditional one. She did not raise me, and, in fact, there were many long periods in my childhood when I did not see or talk to her.
She became more involved in my life when I was around the age of twelve. It was hard to build a relationship with her. I had a lot of hurt feelings and questions. I did not know if I wanted or needed her to be my mother or my friend. I am sure she had her own insecurities and concerns about what our relationship with each other should look like.

Fast forward twenty-five years, my mother and I are friends. Slowly, our lives intertwined, and we fell into a comfortable rhythm of phone calls and lunch dates. I am glad we are friends, but what makes me the happiest is that she has a wonderful relationship with my children. They enjoy spending time with her. She is there when they need her, and I am so grateful for the love and attention she gives to them.

The above picture was taken on her birthday in December. It was her birthday, so we had her over for cake and ice cream.

The next two pictures are from Easter Sunday this year.

  1. I am so happy you have developed a good relationship with your mom. I'm sure it's still hard at times. Thank you for being so raw and honest. Mother's day means different things to different people. I do not have a great relationship with my mom, but I know she loves me.

  2. I love how Jesus and Mary are in the last two pictures. Part of the family, just like they should be.

  3. Whenever I get discouraged about my mom, or about myself as I mom, I remember that our true mother is the Mother of us All. The rest of us are humans with our flaws and foibles. Thanks for sharing and I too am glad you are able to connect with your earthly mom!
